Our costs in Greece

So this is a guest appearance for me, my first attempt at reviewing costs, so here goes.

So the big conclusion here is that we are 15% under budget which is good news. So far only Portugal has been better value, and this has been distorted somewhat due to the one off ferry costs of getting to Greece in the first place..

Travel

Originally we had planned to go to Albania, but the motorhome insurance put paid to that. The ferry to Greece turned out to be cheaper even though it was considerably further, and we saved on the cabin, by sleeping in Dora, which was fun. We kept off the toll roads, which is why we are under, and are we glad we did. They are extortionate when you happen to wander onto them, all part of the austerity measures no doubt. And although we show over budget on the fuel, actually Greece has been pretty cheap for diesel. We ended up taking a cab to a beginning of one of the walks, which is the public transport overspend.

Camping

We have pretty much free camped everywhere in Greece with no trouble at all, except for one night in a refuge, which are always great value for money anyway.

Motorhome

Dora has behaved pretty well, although she gave us a scare with her exhaust filter system, we repaired it remotely, with help from Spain, at no cost, but we did buy a new dustpan and brush, to keep her clean and happy.

Food

Supermarkets were bang on, even though they have the highest VAT rate in the EU. A continued big bone of contention between me and Susana is how often we eat out. This time it was down to the fact we spent a week in Albania, so we were both actually really looking forward to some good, simple home cooked Lidl.

Others

We found Wi-fi quite expensive, but plentiful, so have been able to keep up with the blog without resorting to McD’s or free Wi-Fi bars, much more pleasant. Souvenirs were practical, maps for climbing and the activities were all those Greek antiquities we went to see! Quite frankly if I ever see another Greek temple, it will be too soon. I have had it with the Greek and Roman empire, bring on the Ottoman!
