We awoke to a familiar feeling, aching limbs. Susana had not slept well. Today we planned to leave Benasque, heading for a small village nearby, Eristes.
Pico Aneto doesn’t give up its summit easily
We were so exhausted after climbing Monte Perdido that we bailed out from trekking to Refugio Pineta as we had originally planned. The weather was still sunny and clear, the perfect conditions to climb high peaks, so we decided to take a day off before climbing Pico Aneto, the highest mountain in the Pyrenees at 3,408 metres.
Farewell to Ordesa
Ordesa and Monte Perdido had been good to us, but it was time to say goodbye. We had planned to trek onwards, along the GR11 to refugio Pineta.

We were awoken before dawn by someone’s head torch blinking in the darkness. Neither of us slept well due to the excitement created by today’s challenge.

A more serious undertaking beckoned in the mountains, where we planned to climb the third highest peak in the Pyrenees.
“Los San Fermines”, the absurdity of a tradition
After our lovely walk along the cliffs of San Sebastian, we headed off to our next big hike in the Pyrenees. On our way, we stopped in Pamplona, a city in the Spanish county of Navarra, where the festivities of “El encierro de los San Fermines” (The Running of the Bulls) take place.

The previous day had been a precursor to today. It was good to get the limbs moving again, all that cheese and wine had taken its toll.
Admin, walking and some fishing
One of the many joys of what we are doing is the waking up to new surroundings each day. Spain had really come up with the goods.
