Canoeing in Wye Valley

We couldn’t pass Wales without stopping in the Wye Valley. This place brings old memories to Gary and I where we used to come to do trekking and rock climbing about ten years ago.

Located in the border between England and Wales, The Wye Valley is one of the most dramatic and scenic landscape areas in southern Britain.

The River Wye is the fifth-longest river in the United Kingdom and one of the most natural and least polluted rivers in Britain and is protected for its entire length. The area designated as an area of national beauty surrounds only the 72-mile stretch lower down the river, from just south of the city of Hereford to Chepstow and it is recognised in particular for its limestone gorge scenery and dense native woodlands, as well as its wildlife, archaeological and industrial remains. It is also historically important as one of the birthplaces of the modern tourism industry. The area is predominantly rural, and many people make a living from tourism, agriculture or forestry.

Because of its large width and slow running waters, the River Wye is perfect for Canoeing and Kayaking and, as we are determined to make the most of the canoes as long as the weather permits, we took them out again last Thursday. This time, we canoed for 4 hours from Kerne Bridge to Monmouth and covered a total distance of 22 kilometres:
