Welsh delicacy – Laverbread

We tried a Welsh delicacy on Thursday night: Laverbread or ‘bara lawr’ in Welsh.

Laverbread is a Welsh delicacy produced from the edible seaweed Laver which grows on the rocky coastal area of Wales. Laverbread is rich in health giving minerals including iron and iodine. Laverbread is traditionally eaten in Wales with fried cockles, mushroom and eggs as a hearty meal.

Available fresh or tinned, it is particularly popular in South Wales but it originates from the regions of Swansea and the Gower peninsula.

Despite coming from the sea, it doesn’t taste particularly fishy which makes it a versatile ingredient to have with either chicken or fish. We prepared it as advised by the fisherman at the local fish shop where we bought it: steamed with a bit of butter on a slice of toast. Accompanied with a light and refreshing and glass of Sauvignon Blanc, it was simply delicious.

Debe de estar bueno, todo es probar .
